Portugal. The Man: A WRNR Private Artist Showcase

This is a rocking’ week at the Rams Head On Stage! Day two of the WRNR 103.1 private artist showcase (presented by Mini of Annapolis) we welcomed the psychedelic rock band, Portugal. The Man. The lunchtime performance was a stop before they head over to their sold out show at the 930 club in D.C.

The band walked around before the show and talked to their fans, and once the show started the audience was glued to their unique sound and funny jokes. The band rocked out for an hour, performing songs from their new album, “In the Mountain in the Cloud” along with random request from the audience, like “1989″ from the “Censored Colors” album. Portugal. The Man also made their second appearance at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival 10th year anniversary in June 2011, as well as Lollapalooza in August. So, it was a great afternoon treat for them to perform here in Annapolis. And, if you haven’t check them out before, take a listen from the video and go see them in concert next time in town!

Just Announced at RHOS

Okay. Just so you know… and because I don’t want you to miss out on some of my favorite shows ever (I’ll let you guess just which ones)… here’s what went on sale at noon today at Rams Head On Stage.

Amel

Saturday, November 26 | Amel Larrieux

An urban chanteuse by birth, the bi-coastal Amel Larrieux grew up in a West Village “artists building” in New York, her parents exposing her early to bohemian characters and experiences that would mold her eclectic sensibilities. Amel has contributed to film soundtracks, writing and singing in such films as Barbershop, Love Jones, Down To Earth, and Sunset Park, as well a Mercedes Benz commercial. She has also collaborated with hip-hop supergroup The Roots on several songs and tours and was also recently recognized with a Grammy nomination for her contribution to “Where is the Love” by Stanley Clarke, on which she joined Glenn Lewis as a featured vocalist.

Ximena

Saturday, December 10 | Ximena Sariñana w. graffiti6 | ALL AGES
presented by 103.1 WRNR

When Mexican vocalist Ximena Sariñana (hi-MEN-a sa-rin-YAH-na) released her debut solo album, Mediocre, in 2008, Rolling Stone gave it four stars and praised it as “one of the strongest debuts from a female singer-songwriter since Norah Jones’ Come Away With Me.” Recording the Spanish-language album was a natural step for Sariñana, who had risen to fame in her homeland as a child actress and had fronted a successful indie band for four years.

SK6ERS

December 26 & 27 | Stephen Kellogg & The Sixers w. Madi Diaz

Stephen Kellogg and his bandmates bring the rich legacy of American rock & roll into the present tense. This is thrilling music; muscular, immediate and life-embracing, steeped in tradition but addressing the present moment boldly and eloquently. There’s nothing hidden or tentative about Kellogg’s music or the values he stands for. If you’ve been itching to crank up some bracing, timeless rock & roll that speaks to these values loudly and proudly, then this is exactly what youve been waiting for.

Maggie

Sunday, January 1 | Maggie Sansone & Friends feat. Al Petteway & Amy White

Start off the New Year with maggie Sansone & Friends/ Al Petteway & Amy White. Award winning musicians welcome in the New Year with stunning instrumentals, Celtic grooves and evocative vocals featuring Maggie Sansone with Andrea Hoag, Pat Egan, Matt Bell and with Al Petteway & Amy White. A festive gathering that blends tradition and innovation praised as, “…spellbinding!” (Dirty Linen World Magazine), “Elegant and soulful” (the Washington Post) and “A great variety of acoustic delights.” (Fiona Ritchie, The Thistle & Shamrock).

aimee

Monday, January 23 | Aimee Mann

From her work in the 80′s with MTV favorite Til Tuesday through her acclaimed solo discs “Whatever” and “I’m With Stupid” in the 90s, Aimee Mann has always been at the forefront of contemporary songwriters. The close of the millennium brought her greatest success, with the simultaneous releases of Bachelor No. 2 and the soundtrack to the film Magnolia, which garnered nominations for an Oscar, a Golden Globe and three Grammys. After a decade in which her music often took a backseat to corporate mergers and contractual obligations, the message was clear: Aimee Mann is here to stay.

hot tuna

Monday, February 27 | Hot Tuna (Acoustic)

The name Hot Tuna invokes as many different moods and reactions as there are Hot Tuna fans — millions of them. To some, Hot Tuna is a reminder of some wild and happy times. To others, that name will forever be linked to their own discovery of the power and depth of American blues and roots music. To newer fans, Hot Tuna is a tight, masterful group that is on the cutting edge of great music.

LeeRitenour

Sunday, March 18 | Lee Ritenour

Growing up in L.A. in the 60′s, Grammy award winning guitarist Lee Ritenour received a rich cross section of exposure to jazz, rock and Brazilian music. From one of his first sessions at 16 with the Mamas and Papas to accompanying Lena Horne and Tony Bennett at 18, his forty year eclectic and storied career is highlighted by a Grammy Award win for his 1986 collaboration with Dave Grusin, Harlequin; 17 Grammy nominations; numerous #1 spots in guitar polls and the prestigious “Alumnus of the Year” award from USC. Ritenour is also noteably a founding member of Fourplay, the most successful band in contemporary jazz, with keyboardist Bob James, bassist Nathan East and drummer Harvey Mason.

Marrakesh

Thursday, March 22 | Marrakesh Express A Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Experience

A band dedicated to tributing CSNY is virtually unheard of due to the difficulty in replicating the 3- and 4-part vocal harmonies that made the group international superstars. Marrakesh Express upholds the integrity of that music with their vivid and realistic performance of CSNY’s most recognizable songs. Featuring four harmonizing vocalists backed by a top-flight band, they deliver a unique and energetic concert performing the classic CSNY hits, deep cuts, and fan favorites.
