Rams Head The Blog

Blogging about food, fun, & beer

Yes, you may just find me asleep in the bread aisle this week;  this thirty-something hit up both Beastie Boys & Taylor Swift this week, pushing me well out of my norm for mid-week activities (thank goodness for coffee).

I won’t kid you and say that I’m any sort of hip-hop expert.  Most of the time, I’m lucky if I catch a word or two amongst the fast and catchy word flow.  My husband just rolls his eyes as I sing the wrong word, hum to the wrong chorus or all-out miss on a song.  I will not revisit the embarrassment by sharing examples with you.

But, while perusing industry gossip on Pollstar.com I came across rising star, Asher Roth. For many of us who are ‘hip’ to Facebook, but still can’t twitter or text, many artist in the Rams Head line-up fall into the “never heard of them category.”  To enlighten you, I bring you Asher Roth.

I should know Roth as he’s more in my age-range than either Beastie Boys or Taylor Swift.   Oh shoot, another embarrassing moment, he’s born in EIGHTY-seven.  Forget that point.   He’s from Pennsylvania, that’s not far from me.  East Coast.  Ok, we have something in common again.

Like so many artists, MySpace launched Asher Roth into mainstream pop culture scene.   Long gone are the days of sending in demo tape after demo tape… a free sign-up to MySpace to create your tribe is often enough to get you in front of the right people.  No different than Remy, with his Arlington: The Rap or local comedic sensation Brandon Hardesty, the $200 Flip is all that it takes to plateau you into the national spotlight.  However, after that… it’s up to you.

Roth is an easy target for many.  A white, college educated rapper from Pennsylvania who many believe to be a marketed success story.  But, his time in the spotlight has outlasted than one “I Love College” video and his views & thoughts continue to be heard.   Check out this interesting Q&A from Billboard magazine:

iTunes review of the debut album, Asleep in the Bread Aisle, gives kudos to club beats while aligning his style with “the ideas of Nineties bands like Cake.” And in the end… “He hosts a good party, and is right at home as the highly-quotable master of ceremonies.”

A good party. A great Master of Ceremonies. Enough said.
