KENTUCKY DERBY

This year marks the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby.  According to KentuckyDerby.com, “The Kentucky Derby is America’s original, extravagant springtime sports party.  While a horse race is at the heart of the spectacle, there are many intriguing aspect of the America’s Race™.”   Those aspects include Fashion, Celebrities, Tradition and Cuisine.

Rams Head Taverns (Savage & Annapolis) have taken their own spin on the Derby Celebration each year, asking customers to get out their Derby bests in celebration of the running of the races.

That history, which includes literally getting your hands dirty in the dirt, is part of why I so enjoy our Mother’s Day promotion:

In 2006 (or ’07 – the years start to blur together) we created the “LET LOVE BLOOM” Mother’s Day promotion. In our endeavors to create a new program, I found myself scouring the aisle at Homestead Gardens to purchase seed packets for the Mom’s.  I think some Mom’s may have received packets for Corn or Tomatoes that year – my procrastination did not leave me much room for being picky.

But those of you who have stuck with us over the years, know that we have bloomed our promotion to include some beautifully designed custom seed packets in true appreciate of the Mom’s in our world. We try and pick a perennial each year so that Mom can enjoy the celebration of her day, year after year. This year we have chosen the bright and colorful Zinnia.

Just in case digging in the dirt is not your Mom’s cup of tea – fear not!   Each Mom also gets to enjoy a Mimosa on the house.  We hope that the little bubbly helps Mom to kick back and enjoy her day!!   And we certainly know that Mom enjoys taking the day off from cooking, so we think between us doing the cooking + the mimosa + the seed packets, that you just need to add the LOVE and TIME to share with her.

There’s no need to wait until the weekend or travel to the beach - we’re celebrating the wonders of a Beach House this Thursday May 3rd at all Rams Head restaurants with the Dominion Beach House Beer Release!!  This Bohemian Pilsner has been brewed will all natural ingredients, is crisp and refreshing, making it perfect for a sunny summer day!

Technical Stuff: Golden in color and crystal clear, the noble hops are very prevalent giving it a spicy floral flavor and aroma, notably one of the defining characteristics of the Saaz hop, with a clean malty palate.  ABV 5.2% IBU 42

History Lesson: The birth of Pilsner beer can be traced back to its namesake, the ancient city of Plzen (of Pilsen) which is situated in the western half of the Czech Republic in what was once Czechoslovakia and previously part of the of Bohemian Kingdom. This beer was first brewed back in 1842 and was thusly named Pilsner after the city of it’s birth. The bright, golden beer, made possible by a refinement in the malting process and high quality hops, captured the imagination of drinkers at a time when mass produced glass was replacing stone and metal drinking vessels.

About Wisteria Wheat:

The Wisteria Wheat beer was named by the first Fordham brewer, Allen Young and the Rams Head Tavern General Manager, Corky Fertitta.  “Allen and I were sitting on the patio one spring day, tasked with coming up with some sample names for beers for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Fire Arms. All beer names have to be approved by them before you can sell it. We came up with a couple random names then hit on Wisteria Wheat, it had a nice ring to it and the wisteria vine on our patio is well known. All these years later we can’t remember any of the other names we came up with that day, but wisteria wheat stuck, and has been, ever since,  the name of one of our most beloved seasonal”.

The Wisteria Wheat utilizes a pale malt, malted wheat and torrified wheat and has an ABV of 5.8%.  Fordham Brewer brews the Wisteria Wheat with Perle hops and chamomile and it has 11 IBUs.  Interestingly, its flavor primarily comes from the Weizen strain of yeast, which gives it notes of banana and clove.

According to the www.Marylandday.org website, “Maryland Day” is a collaborative event to celebrate the history of Maryland by the local businesses of the Historic Annapolis area. Whether you like historic sites, cultural activities, dining or shopping!

The Maryland General Assembly authorized Maryland Day as a legal holiday devoted to Maryland history.

Rams Head Tavern Annapolis restaurant will be serving a special Maryland Day menu along with the regular tavern menu all weekend long. This menu will feature signature Maryland dishes including crab cake sliders, Baltimore steamed shrimp and Maryland fried chicken. “Maryland day is a great event to celebrate. Can’t wait until St. Patty’s Day for green beer, traditional Irish grub and or live music by the biggest local acts? You’re in luck.

The countdown has started to the biggest Saint Patrick’s Day bash in town! On Saturday, March 17^th, 2012 the Rams Head restaurants will be celebrating the traditional Irish Day with green beer, live entertainment, and of course Irish fare.

The Rams Head kitchens will be serving the traditional corn beef and cabbage, Bangers and Mash, Irish Lamb Stew along with the regular menu.

All Rams Head restaurant locations will start the St. Patrick’s Celebration with $.50 Guinness draft beers from Noon- 1:00pm, $3 Green beer, $5 Jameson Drinks, and $5 car bombs, St. Patrick’s Day decorations and live music.
