If there was ever a band that served up a call to action just with their sound, then surely Scissor Sisters are amongst the ranks. Since having seen them open up for none other than Lady Gaga I, personally, have not stopped dancing, giggling, smiling and acting like a total goofball, out to run the world with good times and an attitude so fierce you wouldn’t dare me to drop it like it’s hot.
Since announcing this show on the Rams Head Live schedule, there has been no shortage of obsessed, crazed, dazzled and delirious fans that can’t wait to get their hands on some tickets (tomorrow at 10am). To win your VIP pair before the stampede, comment at the bottom of this post with what call to action you hear every time you spin a little SS. And remember, keep it clean (ish).
A good example is… “When I hear, “I Don’t Feel Like Dancing” it makes me wanna park perpendicular in the middle of Pratt during rush hour, pull out the Say Anything boom box, press play on this song and throw down like Fame part 3: The Hipster Generation.”
Marc Broussard is a showman. His shows in our Annapolis and Baltimore clubs are amongst our most well received and buzzed about performances. He returns to Rams Head Live in Baltimore next Tuesday night with up and coming crowd pleaser Drew Hoclomb and the Neighbors (who one critic calls “a kind of warm blanket-like swirl of country and blues like Buddy Miller and Al Green, with dashes of modern songwriters a la Jason Mraz.”). Marc recently took some time off from his busy tour to talk to us about his new album, his dream tour and recite some Gloria Estefan.
1) Your new album, tentatively titled Marc Broussard, is available right now only at your live shows. That’s an interesting concept. Can you explain why you chose to make it available at yours before the general release?
MB: We originally intended for the album to be released in the summer of 2010. However, we really wanted to get it right, so we kept tweaking things so it took quite a bit longer. The label was really cool to allow me to sell it almost 4 months prior to street date. This way I can get out and let my fans get the first taste of what I believe is my best album to date.
2) Tell us about the new record. How do you feel about it? What can fans expect from it?
MB: Like I said, I think this is my strongest effort yet. I feel that the songs are as strong as they’ve ever been. As always, the fans can dance to it…they can roll down the windows and drive to it…and they can certainly cry to it. A good album is a roller coaster of emotions, right?
3) We, of course are very familiar with your music from your stellar Rams Head On Stage shows over the years. How would you describe your music to someone who isn’t familiar with it? What would you tell someone to expect from one of your live shows?
MB: Well my recorded music i’m not very familiar with, expect for this new record. i’ve listened to that quite a bit. now, as for the live show, from my perspective it’s a little something like this… 1 2 3 4…come on shake your body baby do that conga. I know you can’t control yourself any longer. feel the rhythm of the music getting stronger, don’t you fight it ’til you’ve tried it, do that conga beat.
4) On your past summer tour, you sold bracelets to raise money for the Gulf Watermen affected by the oil spill. Were you personally affected by the spill? Do you still live in Louisiana when you aren’t touring?
MB: I wasn’t personally affected, but close friends of mine were. I still live in Carencro, Louisiana on the street that I grew up in. I’ve lived in three different houses on that street!
5) The opener for your Baltimore show is Drew Holcomb – what can you tell us about him?
MB: Drew and his wife Elie are incredible people, as are the rest of his band “The Neighbors.” I actually met Drew through my guitar player, Nathan Dugger. Nate is actually in Drew’s band when he’s not out touring with me.
6) For a newer song, your “Home” has been covered a lot, most notably by Blake Shelton on Clash of the Choirs and Kelly Clarkson during her tour. What’s it like to hear your music re-interpreted, particular in the dramatic way it was re-done by Shelton?
MB: It’s always a trip hearing someone else cover your song, especially when it’s done by someone famous. George Benson recently covered a song of mine called “Come In From The Cold” off of my SOS album and Joe Cocker cover “Hard Knocks” from my last album, Keep Coming Back. Very humbling!!
7) Home was also used as the theme song for Medium – does placement like that bring with it a lot of recognition?
MB: I’m not sure how much recognition, but it definitely adds coal to the fire.
8) If you could tour with any musician for one summer, who would it be and why?
MB: Adele. Because her new record has such a great sound. She’s got a lot going for her right now.
Marc Broussard performs at Rams Head Live next Tuesday night. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at www.ramsheadlive.com.

01.31 Girl Talk presented by Monozine Just Announced + On Sale NOW!
Greg Gillis, the man behind the one man band Girl Talk, recently described his shows to Time Magazine as a “house party meets concert kind of vibe.” That’s an understatement. The writer noted that most people wouldn’t mix the rhymes of Notorious B.I.G. with the melody of Elton John’s Tiny Dancer and expect an ear-pleasing result. The musical misfit and laptop magician broke into the mainstream with his 2006 hit album Night Ripper, whose 16 tracks sampled more than 150 artists, from Abba to 2 Live Crew to Aerosmith. Come party with him January 31st.

03.24 Dance Gavin Dance Downtown Battle Mountain Tour
w. Iwrestledabearonce, In Fear and Faith, Close to Home,
DJ Big Chocolate – presented by Monozine & 24-7
Just Announced + On Sale Thursday, December 16 @ 10am!
Since their inception, Dance Gavin Dance have featured one of the post-hardcore’s scene’s most interesting sounds, mixing elements of various genres including hardcore, indie, jazz and alternative rock. The Sacramento, CA band return to Baltimore in march reunited WITH original vocalist Jonny Craig (also of Emarosa). They will be playing their classic album, Downtown Battle Mountain, record from start to finish. This will be one of the most talked about shows of the spring for sure.
When Robyn’s North American tour sold out the 930 Club this past August, I made the mistake of staying home with the dogs and some choco ice cream. Sure, it was relaxing and I was able to catch up on my insert-trashy-reality-show-here, but thanks to Twitter’s “publish to facebook” feature (and my inability to put my iPhone down for more than 5 minutes) it was instantly evident that home-with-The-Real-Housewives was the wrong choice. And who can I thank for bringing this poor decision to light? The date that I ditched: Kyle Holtgren (aka DJ Aisle-K of Peer Pressure) and his fluttering facebook fingers. His front row positioning and love for sharing forced me to watch clips of laser-lit crowd sing-alongs on grainy web videos during trash-tv commercial breaks. Sinking deeper into the couch as Nene or Bethany or Danielle was yammering on about some bitchy nonsense or bad boob job, all I could think was “harumph”.
Well, she’s back! For one night only at Rams Head Live! And the first person I called… the date I ditched… DJ Aisle-K.
Aisle-K: “First of all, I have a bone to pick with the description of her on the Rams Head Live site. She couldn’t be further from a “diva”. She’s an anti-diva. Not pretentious in the slightest. She’s like Peaches, but you can take her home to meet your folks.”
Chester: Noted. We’ll work on that. Any thoughts on her live show? You know, in case there are any other potential wafflers out there that I need to convince.
A: “Her live show is minimal on theatrics but she doesn’t need them. From the minute the show starts, she attacks like a wild animal just let out of her cage. She’s completely engrossed in the music. Nothing is choreographed. She just lets it flow from the heart. There’s no doubt that she’s enjoying every minute of being on stage and if she’s faking it…. she’s doing a good fucking job.”
C: I can’t put my finger on it, but there’s something different about this girl. It just feels authentic. You know me. I have like, 5 modern pop albums in my iTunes and when it comes to Ke$ha and Gaga we don’t necessarily see eye to eye.
A: “Pft. What I love most about her is her integrity as an artist. She was a major label pop star at one point (“Show Me Love” anyone?) But, like many other young songbirds, the label tried to put her in a box. When she came to them with her own vision – in the form of the single “Who’s That Girl?”- they scoffed at her newly liberated electro sound and refused to release it. So, she started her own label, Konichiwa Records. Her first album on Konichiwa, titled “Robyn”, became a global phenomenon and her vision was realized.”
C: I think that’s what initially intrigued me about her. The whole “Don’t Fucking Tell Me What To Do” attitude. She’s very self aware with a little punk flare. And she is so stinkin’ cute!
A: “Robyn’s songs sound like pop candy on the surface, but lyrically they’re incredibly honest. When you hear songs like ‘With Every Heartbeat’ and ‘Love Kills’, it’s clear that someone must’ve hurt her deeply in the past. But then you hear songs like ‘Hang With Me’ and ‘Indestructible’ and you know that she’s willing to give love another shot. It’s such a great balance to have pop stardom & artistic merit. It’s difficult to achieve. Robyn executes it flawlessly and she should be more famous than she is.
C: Well Kyle, I wouldn’t worry too much. Clearly she’s on her way to superstar status. And just think, we’ll be able to say ‘oh yeah, Robyn. Love her. Saw her waaaay back in 2011′.
A: “Ha! Except I’ll be able to say I saw her twice. Slacker.”
Join us February 1 at Rams Head Live for the show that everyone is talking about… or run the risk of never living it down. Thanks, bud.
12.27 – Wiz Khalifa Second show added by demand! Just Announced + On Sale NOW!
Our final hip-hop show of 2010 may indeed be our biggest. Wiz Khalifa comes to Rams Head Live for the first time, with both of his 9:30 Club dates on the Waken Baken tour sold out and an MTV award for “Hottest Breakthrough MC.” His mixtape, Kush and Orange Juice, was one of the year’s most talked about and with Mac Miller on board this is bound to be one to remember. Might want to get your tickets soon… Our first Wiz date sold out in the blink of an eye. With the phones continuing to ring of the hook there’s no reason why this one shouldn’t also.
In today’s instantly downloadable and quickly consumed culture, bands like Anberlin are a dying breed. Over the course of eight years and five full-lengths, the band have established themselves as one of alternative rock’s most exciting acts and as a band who refuse to limit themselves to one specific scene or sound… and it’s paid off. Meanwhile, Pennsylvania’s Circa Survive’s multi-faceted sound has always allowed infinite space for interpretation, melding intricate prog and mind-bending psychedelia with massive riffs and singer Anthony Green’s reflective, intimate lyricism.

02.01 – Robyn presented by 24-7 Just Announced + On Sale Fri, Nov 26 @ 10am!
SPIN magazine says, “backed by two live drummers and two synthesizers, it was immediately evident why this swedish electro-pop diva has been turning sold out U.S.concert halls into sweaty discos reminiscent of Studio 54″ Pitchfork festival organizers said, “after finally seeing Robyn’s live performance, we understand why her style of euro-dance music has lifted her to international stardom”. She was hand picked by Lady Gaga and Madonna to share their stages all over the world, now the swedish dance-floor diva will make her Baltimore debut at Rams Head Live!

02.12 – Milkshake presented by 24-7 Just Announced + On Sale Fri, Nov 26 @ 10am!
Grammy-nominated chlidren’s group Milkshake is a band on a mission: to create great rock music for kids. Led by singer Lisa Mathews and guitarist Mikel Gehl Milkshake has won over preschoolers without compromising songcraft, stagecraft or their authentic rock&roll spirit. With tuneful, memorable songs that evoke influences from Rodgers and Hammerstein to Lennon-McCartney to The White Stripes, Baltimore’s own Milkshake continues to create music that appeals to both kids AND their parents.
Great interview piece here from Tallahassee on indie-darling Joanna Newsom. Keep an eye out the next couple days – nearly every Baltimore print publication will be posting a story of some kind with her. If you’re not in the know, and you are a fan of Iron and Wine, The Decemebrists, Andrew Bird, Deerhoof or Devendra Banhart you should check out the interview below.
Friday night is going to be one huge ska Battle Royal – the main event? Reel Big Fish vs. The Aquabats. On the undercard (maybe special guest referees if you will?) are Koo Koo Kanga Roo and Suburban Legends. Soooo….who’s the odds on favorite to win grand champion of one of the year’s biggest ska bills? Let’s meet the contestants….
REEL BIG FISH
Reel Big Fish were one of the legions of Southern California ska-punk bands to edge into the mainstream following the commercial success of No Doubt and Sublime. Like most of their peers, the band was distinguished by their hyperkinetic stage shows, juvenile humor, ironic covers of new wave pop songs, and metallic shards of ska. The group cultivated an underground following that broke into the mainstream in the summer of 1997, when their single “Sell Out” became a modern rock radio and MTV favorite.
Since then, they have continued to build their cult following and have become known for frantic live shows that leave audiences buzzed and buzzing.
THE AQUABATS
A zany eight-piece (at least) ska unit from the bleached-out California coast, the Aquabats have earned respect for an energized new wave of ska punk from figures ranging from Courtney Love to the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Squirrel Nut Zippers. Led by vocalist Bat Commander, the group appears to impersonate a different horde of thugs from the ’60s Batman series on each LP cover . Calling themselves the first all-crime fighting all-surfing rock supergroup in history, the Aquabats travel the highways and by-ways of the land in their trusty super customized Winnebego tour vehicle!
Definitely a contender.
KOO KOO KANGA ROO
Koo Koo Kanga Roo is a live show unlike anything you have ever experienced. With the carefree simplicity of your kindergarten days, a Koo Koo Kanga Roo party is a dance extravaganza! The undeniable urge to move your body will lead you to the dance floor as you hear their catchy pop melodies and infectious dance beats.
SUBURBAN LEGENDS
And finally, in this corner. From the self-described ”cultural wasteland” of Orange County comes the superhero-like brilliance of Suburban Legends. Six recklessly handsome boys who have devoted their lives to creating a glorious variety pack of ska music, all for your enjoyment. They encourage you to put down your antidepressants and forget what’s waiting on TIVO and come enjoy a rocking good adrenaline rush-inspiring live set.
