Portugal. The Man: A WRNR Private Artist Showcase

This is a rocking’ week at the Rams Head On Stage! Day two of the WRNR 103.1 private artist showcase (presented by Mini of Annapolis) we welcomed the psychedelic rock band, Portugal. The Man. The lunchtime performance was a stop before they head over to their sold out show at the 930 club in D.C.

The band walked around before the show and talked to their fans, and once the show started the audience was glued to their unique sound and funny jokes. The band rocked out for an hour, performing songs from their new album, “In the Mountain in the Cloud” along with random request from the audience, like “1989″ from the “Censored Colors” album. Portugal. The Man also made their second appearance at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival 10th year anniversary in June 2011, as well as Lollapalooza in August. So, it was a great afternoon treat for them to perform here in Annapolis. And, if you haven’t check them out before, take a listen from the video and go see them in concert next time in town!

Check it.

Knees still knocking, hands still shaking… most boney body parts tender from receiving thrown bows – and throwing a few of our own; Lastnight’s Beastie Boys show was huge.

98 Rock is already calling it an instant classic and the Baltimore Sun’s Sam Sessa may have summed it up best when he shared one fan’s sentiment: “I can’t believe I am only ten rows back from the Beastie Boys!”

Indeed, last night’s show here was something special. “Balltown”….er, B-More, represented well, responding appropriately to the Beasties’ song choices: moshing furiously during hardcore sendups like “Heart Attack Man”; grooving oh so sweetly on the slow jam instrumentals and, in general, vibing out with a Chesire size #@*%-eating grin. Encores aside, the most memorable moments for me were the big-timing entrance to “Root Down”, and the sheer playfulness of “Remote Control” and “Something’s Gotta Give.” Oh yeah…lets not forget about Mix Master Mike. He somehow managed to outshine the amazing set piece that the Beasties are carrying with them for Bonnaroo. Its always great when hyped shows live up to the billing – this one did so and more, and by the time the Beasties get to Manchester, Bruce and Phish better watch their backs: it seems like Mike D, Ad-Rock and MCA got show-stealin’ on their mind.

The Gauntlet, it approaches.

Baltimore/D.C., you’ve posed your challenge. And as a seasoned concert veteran, I accept.

Manchester: You think bunk drugs, sweaty hippies and putrid commodes is a challenge? – Pfft. 4 days of live entertainment on 100 acres? – Pfft. Fighting a sea of thousands just to get within 50 yards of the stage? Bonnarroo, I bite my thumb at you, Sir.

Try fourteen shows over the course of two weeks, all within the Baltimore/D.C. metro area. I pick the shows, spend the same amount of money (or less), and I sleep in my own bed at the end of the night. Some vitamin B, a tall glass of cold water and my soft, cozy Downy fabric-softner-scented sheets… mmmmm, air conditioning.

Although I have recruited an army of enthusiastic show soldiers, I fear I may witness a handful of my men fall at the mercy of the Gauntlet. We ride confidently into battle, merch allowance and beer money in hand, this Sunday at dusk. We’ve studied our opponents and are prepared for an onslaught of electronica, art rock, surf guitar, and Ukranian-gypsy-punk; Jazz fusion, 90’s rock Gods, southern sirens, and soulful Citizens.

For those only able to fight as the pocket, work schedule and/or spouse will allow it, I invite you to join us on the battlefront as you are able. Consider yourselves our reserves. Below is a detailed plan of our charted course:

Alas, the sun is high in the sky – With Santigold conquered, I must head back to camp where I’ll prepare my armour and rally the troops… meaning get home, put together a totally cute outfit, scarf down some cold pizza and pack the car full of homies.

We ride!

Escape of the Little Bonnaroo Box

Arguably there are plenty of times when, suffice it to say, we simply misplace something – a cd, tickets to a show, your right shoe, etc. But I am beginning to feel that not often enough do we account for those times when the said object just gets up and walks away. I have one such instance to tell you about.

Once upon a time there was a box of stickers next to my desk. He was a little guy, brown, couple inches tall on a good day, a pleasure to have around. He was always looking over my shoulder and checking out the Rams Head Live schedule, just chomping at the bit for his debut in the venue because people need stickers but even more so he needed the music. And this little sticker box needed the music bad.

He had a wish list of Rams Head Live shows to attend that he’d scribbled on a napkin and scotch taped to my desk. Santigold, Band of Horses, Citizen Cope, Ani Difranco and Neko Case. Some real rockin’ choices this little guy had but who am I to assume his music tastes were anything less than righteous?

Truth be told I eventually had to break the news that he would probably only be at one of these shows because people just love the stickers and his job would soon be done. I had to shoot from the hip but understandably he did not take it so well and next day, Gone!

The way I see it he’s going somewhere he can see them all at once because he is mad enough at me for saying I wouldn’t take him to every show. This is when it hit me! Bonnaroo. This elusive little box, crawled off with his four little flaps and hitched a ride to Bonnaroo, where he can see them all at one time.

Now, I can identify with anyone who lets nothing stand between themselves and the music. But if you don’t have the dough to haul it out to Tennessee in June or you would rather see a full set list,  than you aren’t terribly unlike the rest of us, however slightly less determined than our one and only little Bonnaroo Box. But you are in luck because we’ve lined up 5 of the hottest shows going on out there and they’re just down the street!

If anyone happens to see this little guy end-over-ending it down Route 66, please inform. We would like to make sure he gets there safely and with a decent seat. For all the rest of us, don’t miss your chance to catch these acts in your own back yard at Rams Head Live. Santigold is first up off the Bonnaroo list on May 31st w/ Trouble Andrew and Amanda Blank. Check out the rest of the Bonnaroo shows you can catch up with at Rams Head Live this Summer below. And stayed tuned for us to announce one more heavy hitter off the Bonarroo lineup.

6/7       Band of Horses w/ Arboreteum

6/12     Citizen Cope

7/9       Ani Difranco

7/28     Neko Case w/ Jason Lytle
